When a group of 20 friends and acquaintances find themselves the winners of a $386 million jackpot, their lives are changed forever. For the Schaefers and the Walshes the money spells trouble when two people find themselves in love — but not with their respective spouses. For two teens and their parents the winning has different consequences. Damien can't wait to get away from his controlling family while Frankie finds her separated parents getting involved in her life — to fight over the money. Among the winners are also Sean Mathers, who's not happy about the publicity he's receiving, Kimberly, a single mom living in a trailer park, and Maggie, a generous nurse.

Episode Notes - |
The song Life Is Short by Butterfly Boucher featured at the end was also used as the theme song of the short-lived ABC show The Days. The show starred David Newsom who plays Frankie's father Eric in this episode.
According to Chad Frey, who worked as an art director on the pilot episode, the working title of the show was Ticket to Ride.
Odd coincidence: On Windfall, Peter's (Luke Perry) best friend is named Cameron Walsh (played by Jason Gedrick). On Beverly Hills, 90210, Luke Perry's character Dylan's best friend was named Brandon Walsh and he was played by Jason Priestley.
Lana Parrilla (Nina) and Jason Gedrick (Cameron) both starred in the NBC crime series Boomtown. Additionally, Lana Parrilla and Sarah Wynter (Beth) have both starred in the FOX hit series 24, but in different seasons.
One-word descriptions of each of the nine main characters (according to NBC):
- Beth: Suspicious
- Cameron: Secretive
- Nina: Lustful
- Peter: Carefree
- Sean: Dangerous
- Frankie: Innocent
- Damien: Rebellious
- Maggie: Generous
- Kimberly: Desperate
The pilot episode of Windfall was initally developed for FOX, but the network ultimately passed. NBC picked it up when it became available, reshot the pilot, and ordered a season of 13 episodes.
Malinda Williams who plays Kimberly George is credited as a guest star even though she is is shown in the cast picture for the show on the NBC website. Instead Sarah Morris who plays Zoe Reida is not shown in the picture but is credited in the main cast in this episode.
Even though Jon Foster's character is called Damien Cutler in all NBC publicity material, Cutler isn't his last name. It's revealed to be either Brunner (or Brenner) in episode 1-2: The Getaway.
Nicholle Tom, who played Alissa, Cameron's old student, had a recurring role on Beverly Hills, 90210, which also starred Luke Perry (Peter).
Trivia:
We find out that Sean Mathers isn't his real name.
The winning lottery numbers are 12 9 19 7 1. The numbers 12, 9, 7 and 1 represent Cameron's birthday, December 9, 1971.
Allusions:
Damien's user name when he was chatting with Frankie using the instant messenger was Damien666. This is a reference to the movie The Omen (1976) (and its sequels), where a young boy named Damien was the manifestation of Satan and had a birth mark in the shape of the mark of the beast, the number 666. |
