The show centers around New Haven Psychiatric Associates, a rambling Victorian house-turned-office where the personal and professional lives of multiple therapists will play out and intersect. Dr. Ann Bellowes finds her life at a crossroads when she catches her husband Phil, a fellow therapist, having sex with their own couple's counselor. As Ann attempts to cope, she is comforted by her officemates: Dr. James LeCroix, a child psychologist who is not quite a grown up himself, counseling a family who is having behavioral problems with their recently adopted 10-year-old Russian son — whom they are contemplating giving back; Dr. Taj Kalid, a brilliant, business-minded analyst and Dr. Cordelia Banks, a psychologist who often sees clients in between internet shopping sprees, who are involved together in a secret office romance. In need of a new tenant to replace her husband's office space, Ann finds fresh faced Barry White, a young lawyer brand new to town who agrees to represent her in her possible divorce proceedings. Overseeing the therapists' antics is Fred Smedresman, the dry humored office manager and first-class snoop.
