Episode Notes - |
|
The first episode of the new Doctor Who television series, the story introduces Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler. While they are never mentioned by name (except in the credits), the plastic mannequins animated by the Nestene Consciousness were referred to as Autons in the original series; the villains were featured in the serials "Spearhead From Space" and "Terror of the Autons" along with the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee. The Nestene Consciousness was mentioned in the two stories but the character itself was never seen. The TARDIS control room has changed since the last time we saw it, in the 1996 Doctor Who film. Also making a return is the Doctor's sonic screwdriver. The implication is that the Doctor has recently regenerated, as he looks at his appearance in the mirror in Rose's flat. The surname Tyler is a popular one with series executive producer/writer Russell T Davies (having been used in several of his previous productions including "Queer as Folk"). The surname Finch (for Clive and his wife) was identified in notes prior to the story's transmission but was not used in the final version. Nicholas Briggs, who has spent years as the Dalek voices and as a writer and producer for Big Finish, voices the Nestene Consciousness. The running time of 44 minutes, 10 seconds includes the trailer for next week's episode, which ran between the final music 'sting' and the end credits. Robert Holmes was credited as creator of the Autons, while Ron Grainer received a credit for the original theme music. The story was repeated on BBC3 at 7.00pm on Sunday, March 27. |
