Plot Outline

Meet Meredith Grey. Daughter of famous surgeon Ellis Grey and currently recovering from a one-night stand. She shoos away her evening's companion, saying she'll be late for her first day of work. She is a first year intern at Seattle Grace Hospital and is working alongside some colorful characters. Cristina Yang is a highly competitive Stanford graduate who befriends Meredith. George O'Malley is a quirky warm hearted man who learns a lesson or two on his first day. Izzie Stevens is a former model who doesn't get any special treatment on her first day. And Alex Karev is an arrogant jerk who misdiagnoses a patient on his first shift. Overseeing them is Miranda Bailey, (not-so-) affectionately dubbed 'The Nazi'. Meredith also gets a surprise when she realizes that her friend from the night before is a co-worker, and even worse, her boss.

Episode Notes - EDIT EPISODE
Peter Horton received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for his work on this episode.

Katherine Heigl (Isobel "Izzie" Stevens) has twice previously played a character named Isabel, albeit spelled differently than here (Isabel), on Roswell and in Wuthering Heights.

The show's main title sequence is not shown in this episode.

Trivia:
Dr. Bailey points out four pagers to Meredith, George, Cristina, and Izzie, but when George picks his up last, there are still two remaining.

After the medivac helicopter lands on the pad there is an aerial shot of everyone wheeling the stretcher away from it. They've covered up the KOMO logo in this shot with "SGH" (Seattle Grace Hospital) and added a ramp leading off of the pad to the roof. But if you look closely there is no way off of the roof except for two staircases.

In the sequence in the beginning when the medivac helicopter is coming in to land, you can clearly see the "KOMO 4" logo on the side of the building. KOMO is ABC's local affiliate station, so it makes sense that they'd use the building, but covering the logo might have been a good idea.

You can try pacing Asystole but only if it is witnessed. Ellen Pompeo's character did a 3 stack shock when her patient flatlined the only problem is Asystole is not a shockable rhythm, meds are the only way to treat it. Which is partially true. You should not use transcutaneous pacing.

Check out the first scene in the locker room and the lack of continuity with the stethascope, as he walks over to talk he puts it around his neck but in the 3 shot before they all leave the room it is back in his hand and he puts it around his neck again.

Allusions:
Meredith: If I hadn't taken the Hippocratic Oath, I would Kevorkian her with my bare hands.
The Hippocratic Oath is a oath that serves as a set of guidelines for physicians and is something they usually say or vow when they receive their license to practice medicine. It is usually summarized with the word "do no harm" but those words were not in the original version.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian is the poster child in the United States for physician-assisted suicide. He is currently in prison in Michigan for helping 100 people to commit suicide. He was charged with several counts of second-degree murder. His conviction lead to the legalization of assited suicide in Oregon. In Oregon, it is named the Death with Dignity Act.

Izzie: 007? What's 007?
Meredith: Licensed to kill.
These are references to the series books and movies about a fictional spy named James Bond. His agent number was 007 (pronounced "double-oh-seven") and he was a covert spy with the catchphase "Licensed to Kill" since he had been by his government.

The Show Title: Grey's Anatomy
Gray's Anatomy is a famous anatomy textbook published over a century ago. People still use it today. The shows title is a play on the book. Yahoo! has it for free online.

Episode Title: "A Hard Day's Night"
"A Hard Day's Night" is also the title of a Beatles song. Incidentally, so is the title of the 1987 Patrick Dempsey movie "Can't Buy Me Love".

Quotes:
George: Maybe I should have gone into geriatrics. No one minds when you kill an old person.
Cristina: Surgrey's hot. It's the marines. It's macho. It's hostile. It's hardcore. Geriatrics is for freaks who live with their mothers and never have sex.
George: I've got to get my own place.

Cristina: You should get some sleep you look like crap.
Meredith: I look better than you.
Cristina: Not possible.

Meredith: Did you let me scrub in for this operation because I slept with you?
Derek: Yes.(Meredith gives him a look) Just kidding.

George: 007. They're calling me 007, aren't they?
Izzie & Meredith: No-one's calling you 007.
George: I was on the elevator and Murphy whispered 007.
Cristina: Okay, how many times are we going to go through this, George? Five, ten? Give me a number or else I'm gonna hit you.
George: Murphy whispered 007 and everyone laughed.
Izzie: He wasn't talking about you.
George: Are you sure?
Meredith: Would we lie to you?
George: Yes!

Meredith: We should pretend it never happened.
Derek: What never happened? You sleeping with me? Or you throwing me out this morning? Because both are fond memories I'd like to hold on to.
Meredith: No, there will be no more memories. I'm not the girl in the bar anymore and you're not the guy. This can't exist. You get that right?
Derek: You took advantage of me and you wanna forget about it?
Meredith: I did not---
Derek: I was drunk vulnerable and good looking and you took advantage.
Meredith: I was the one who was drunk and you are not that good looking.

George: This shift is a marathon, not a sprint. Eat.
Izzie: I can't.
George: You should eat something.
Izzie: You try eating after performing 17 rectal exams. The Nazi hates me.
George: The Nazi's a resident. I have attendings hating me.

Meredith: (after a one-night stand with Derek) Look, I'm gonna go upstairs and take a shower, OK? And when I get back down here, you won't be here. So goodbye,...
Derek: Derek.
Meredith: Meredith.
(They shake hands)

George: So your by-pass surgery tomorrow with Dr. Burke. I hear he’s good. And after that you can have all the bacon flavored soy product you can eat.
Mr. Savitch: Mmm. Kill me now.
George: I wish I could but … I’m a healer.

Derek:(holds up bra): This is...
Meredith: Embarrasing beyond all levels.

Burke: The only person that can keep a promise so big is God, and I haven't seen him pick up a scalpel lately.

Patient: I can't sleep, my head feels full.
Meredith: It's called thinking. Go with it.

Cristina: [they all see the Bailey] That's the Nazi?
George: I thought the Nazi would be a man.
Meredith: I thought the Nazi would be... the Nazi.
Izzie: [Izzie walks up behind them] Maybe it's professional jealousy. Maybe she's brilliant and they call her a Nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice.
Cristina: Let me guess - you're the model.
[Izzie gives her look]
Izzie: [to the Bailey] Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens, but everyone just calls me Izzie.
Bailey: I have five rules. Memorize them. Rule number one, don't bother sucking up. I already hate you, that's not gonna change.

Meredith: Stop looking at me like that.
Derek: Like what?
Meredith: Like you've seen me naked.

Meredith: If I hadn't taken the Hippocratic Oath, I would Kevorkian her with my bare hands.

Cristina (referring to George): Total 007.
Izzie: 007? What's 007?
Meredith: Licensed to kill.
