Needing a break from things at home, Johnny decides to pay Bruce a visit. Shortly after he arrives, he's hit with a vision of the valuable filly, Splendid Drift, being stolen on the eve of a high stakes race. Johnny and Bruce try to prevent the theft, not realizing that Bruce's girlfriend Maria (Lita Tresierra), Drift's trainer, is actually the target of the kidnapping plot. The kidnappers threaten to kill her if her father Frankie (Conrad Dunn), Drift's jockey, wins the race. When another vision reveals that there will be fatal consequences if Frankie attempts to throw the race, Johnny and Bruce must quickly figure out who wins if Drift loses. With only minutes to spare, Maria is rescued and Drift wins the race. At the victory celebration, Johnny watches Bruce with his new fiancée and decides to go home to try to work things out with Sarah (Nicole deBoer).
Back in Cleaves Mills, Vice President Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery) arrives to take JJ (Connor Price) for a ride on Air Force Two, but when he learns JJ has a science project due, he comes back the next day and offers to help. At the school, Sarah watches Stillson's interactions with her son and the other kids and by the end of the day, she's starting to see him in a new light. When he questions her about Johnny later that afternoon, she tells him they aren't romantically involved. She also explains that her current living arrangement is temporary as she waits for the investigation of Walt to be resolved. Stillson volunteers to look into the investigation to see if he can get some answers. When he's ready to leave, JJ gives him a big hug and in a surprisingly sweet moment, Sarah and Stillson embrace. Late that night when Johnny arrives home, he is hit with a vision of their tender good-byes and his heart sinks as he notes the genuine smile on Sarah's face. Johnny quickly leaves, realizing that the opportunity for a romantic relationship with Sarah has probably passed him by.
