The second season premiere takes off from where last season left off. Though, things on Wisteria Lane have changed. Rex has died, new neighbors, the mysterious Applewhites have moved in, and Edie Britt's new home is near completion.
When Mike arrives home, he finds Zach holding Susan hostage. As Zach is about to shoot Mike, Susan pushes Zach to the ground. Bree calls Lynette, and tells her the news of Rex's passing. Gabrielle, Lynette, and Susan comfort Bree, as Rex's mother, Phyllis arrives with a grudge against Bree. New Wisteria Lane neighbor Betty Applewhite, a concert pianist has a dark and spooky secret to hide. Bree asks Betty to play at Rex's service.
Meanwhile Lynette interviews for an account executive position at a top ad agency, now that Tom has agreed to stay home with the kids. Her boss, Nina (guest star Joely Fisher), is skeptical about hiring a mother of four, so Lynette makes a big effort to impress her. Though, things go awry when Tom is injured and Lynette is forced to take baby Penny with her to the interview. Despite that, Nina's boss is impressed and hires Lynette on the spot,
Gabrielle rejects John, who attempts to seduce her. Gabrielle, feeling guilty about her unfaithfulness, visits Carlos in jail. She doctors a copy of a paternity test to ease Carlos' mind.
After the police misled Mike into believing that Zach is dead, Mike confesses to Susan that Zach is his son. He also tells her of Mary Alice's secret, which shocks her. Susan later tells Mike that she can't be around Zach, and breaks up with him again. The four women gather after the funeral, all troubled by the truth about Mary Alice's suicide and Rex's death.
