Episode Notes - EDIT EPISODE
During the filming of the the Ryan/Luke fight scene in the model home Ben McKenzie was supposed to fake trip, but he actually tripped and ended up falling through a real window. Luckily because of the leather jacket Ben was wearing for the scene he was unhurt by the broken glass.

Quotes:
Marissa: You like them?
Ryan: Yeah, I guess.
Marissa: Well, what do you like?
Ryan: Everything. I don't really listen to music.
Seth: Dude, that's kind of weird. (edit)
Ryan: We're from different worlds.
Marissa: That's not true. (edit)
Seth: You remember the meatloaf incident of '98?
Kirsten: That was brisket.
Seth: Yeah, that's my point exactly. (edit)
Sandy: There's no need for sarcasm.
Seth: I'm not being sarcastic.
Sandy: Well, it's hard to tell sometimes. (edit)
(Talking to Kirsten about Ryan)
Sandy: I was this kid. If someone hadn't helped me, I wouldn't be here. (edit)
Marissa: (talking to Summer on the phone) Seth Cohen says 'Happy Birthday'.
Summer: Who?
Marissa: (turning to Seth) She says 'Thanks'. (edit)
Ryan: So, you listen to punk, huh?
Marissa: I'm angry. (edit)
Ryan: What kind of music do you listen to?
Marissa: Right now, punk.
Seth: Yeah, I'm sorry, but Avril Lavigne doesn't count as punk.
Marissa: Oh yeah? Well, what about The Cramps? Stiff Little Fingers? The Clash? Sex Pistols?
Seth: I listen to the same music as Marissa Cooper? I think I have to kill myself. (edit)
Sandy: The minute you were born I knew ... that I would never take another easy breath again without knowing you were safe.
Seth: So, I'm like asthma? (edit)
Luke: Shut up, queer.
Seth: (quietly) Well, at least I don't shave my chest.
Luke: What'd you say?
Marissa: Luke, come on.
Seth: I just said, you look nice in a sweater vest. It was a compliment. (edit)
Marissa: You guys are up to something.
Seth: Dude, what'd you tell her?
Ryan: I didn't tell her anything. Maybe the black turtleneck in August tipped her off.
Seth: Ok, I was going for stealth. And also, it's slimming. (edit)
Ryan: (to Luke) You know what I like about rich kids? (Ryan then jacks him across the jaw) Nothin'.

Goofs:
As Jimmy and Julie are watching the basketball game on ESPN Classics, when he refers to the particular game, there is a really bad voice over. His voice says "1986," yet his mouth says "1988."

There were a lot of set changes that appeared in this episode versus the Pilot. This is likely because the Pilot was shot on actual locations, while the rest of the episodes were shot in a closed studio. Some of the noticeable differences were:
- Seth has totally different stuff on his walls. There is no way a person makes so many changes to his walls in a day while all those things were going on.
- The decor of the pool house was completely changed. And the backyard didn't have steps in the pilot, but does starting with this episode.
- The layout of the Cohens' house is different as well. The countertop on the kitchen island was black in the pilot and light colored later. The kitchen table chairs are different. - The mailboxes are different.

Seth refers to the book 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac when he talks about the "pancake tour of America." However, it was apple pie and ice cream that Sal, the book's narrator, consumed as he traveled around America.

Seth has completely different posters on his bedroom wall than what he had in the "Pilot" episode. There is no way someone can make so many changes to their wall in a day while all those things were going on.

When Kirsten and Jimmy drive up to the model home, it's suprising they didn't get tipped off to the kids' presence by seeing Marissa's car and Ryan's bike
somewhere outside.

The Lakers/Pistons game was 1988, not 1986, which was the Lakers/Celtics. So, the closed captioning would be correct, but the dub is incorrect. Maybe they took creative license with the date, but if it was just a goof on Jimmy's part and he got the date wrong when talking to Julie, then that would make Marissa 15 throughout the first season of the show.

Trivia:
According to this episode, Summer's birthday is August 13th.

It is likely that Marissa, or at least Ryan, would have seen Luke and his friends sitting in their truck outside the model home before the fight and fire. Sure, they were pre-occupied, but not likely enough to miss a truck right beside the house.

Allusions:
Ryan: He moved away, to Austin.
Marissa: In Texas?
Ryan: He said if I were ever out there look him up.
Austin, Texas is where Benjamin McKenzie, the actor who plays Ryan, grew up.

Luke: You know, you're a little far from 8 Mile!
White rap superstar Eminem starred in a semi-autobiographical movie titled 8 Mile, based on his rise to stardom from his trailer park upbringing. His big fashion statement at the time was wearing a hood and a cap at the same time.
