Byers and Jimmy are in the crowd at a campaign speech, when a reporter begins asking very loaded, and extremely peculiar questions of the candidate, Senator Jefferson. Langly, with Frohike in the van, are directing the reporter, having hijacked his earphone and mike feed from the reporter's own support crew. The outrageousness of the questions, about the Senator's clandestine affairs, and the death of one of his campaign workers, lead the other news techs to the Gunmen's van, towing police officers. Jimmy and Byers are spotted, but somehow manage to escape the grips of the cops.
Once Frohike and Langly are released, Byers and Jimmy meet them at the impound yard to pick up the van. Just as Jimmy attempts to clean the van's window, Byers spots a CLUE written on the van's windshield. It's a prescription number.
Following this lead, Langly and Frohike find that the number is a prescription taken by the Senator's lover. Unfortunately, the process of getting this information leads us through a massive episode of explosive gas gags. Come on guys! Let's get our minds out of the gutter here! At any rate, Frohike's faked gas attack has the desired result, and Langly manages to infiltrate the hospital's system.
Going to the woman's house to check for further evidence, Langly and Frohike happen upon a baby, alone in the apartment. Realizing that this is not only the Senator's love nest, but the Senator's illegitimate child, they take the baby home to take care of him, not wanting to leave him abandoned.
Baby at Gunmen HQ = Disaster. Neither of the guys has any clue. They call in Yves for reinforcements. By the time she gets there, they've built themselves a wonderfully engineered Baby Amuser. Yves, however, finds it less than amusing and drags poor Frohike (whom Langly has said was the father) to a parenting class.
Meanwhile, back at the campaign headquarters, Jimmy attempts to infiltrate as Byers coaches him by earphone. The Senator turns up drunk, and his campaign managers decide that Jimmy is the ideal idiot to stand their man up under the shower to sober him up. In the process Jimmy learns a few secrets. Eventually, the campaign managers attempt to bribe him to keep him quiet. Byers is delighted by this, as it's concrete evidence of wrongdoing on the campaign's part. But Jimmy, ever the outraged innocent, rips the check up into teensy tinsy pieces, causing the normally suave Byers to lose his temper for once.
At the Big Campaign Speech, the Senator is finally confronted with the baby and the evidence, but was genuinely unaware that he had a son, or that his ever-faithful campaign manager was the one covering up all his personal flaws from the public. In an official confession and apology before the assembled public and press, he assumes his campaign is at an end.
Some time later, the Senator comes to retreive his child, much to the dismay of Frohike and Langly. On the TV, it is announced that despite the Senator's confession, he is not out of the running. Cleared of any official wrongdoing, he is not forced out of the campaign, and the public is apparently in a forgiving mood over the affair, so all turns out well(?) in the end. |
