Baylin, Flash and Dale travel to the Verden cloister only to find it a smoking ruin. There are no bodies — Ming's Patriots devastated the cloister and took as many Verden as they could. Flash does find one fugitive Verden named Nokwen caught in a bear trap laid by bounty hunters. The trio disarm the hunters — though Flash and Dale won't Baylin kill them — and free Nokwen.
