Monks attempts to bribe Fagin to bring about Oliver's death, but the wily old man reasons someone else is likely to pay to keep him safe. Sikes enlists the runaway orphan to assist him in the burglary of a country house, which upsets Roger, and the break-in ends in disaster when the youngster is shot.
