Spoke only Spanish until age 5.

Studied at Manhattan's High School for the Performing Arts.

Esai first became interesting in an acting career when he saw Al Pacino in the movie "Dog Day Afternoon" at the age of 12.

Esai's immigrant parents divorced when he was a baby.

As a child, Esai was so concerned about his mother's smoking that he hid her cigarettes.

Originally auditioned for the role of Richie Valens in La Bamba, and Lou Diamond Phillips originally auditioned for the role of Bob.
