Born and raised amongst the gang polluted corners of south central Los Angeles/Watts, Atreyu (Hector) sold oranges and collected empty aluminum cans and plastic bottles alongside his mother in order to make ends meet; hence, he was ridiculed by his school peers while known as "Hector the can collector". Sadly enough, after years of being "jumped" by rival gangs on his way to school, he inevitably joined a gang of his own to feel a sense of patriotism and protection. This lifestyle led to a few stints of incarceration; however, when last released from L.A. County Jail, he was told, "see ya next week," by a so called officer. This angered and yet inspired him to enroll at a local junior college where he majored in theatre/acting. Soon thereafter, Atreyu found himself wearing tights and carrying a sword on stage as Don John the Bastard in Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing"; this was indeed the beginning of a second chance for him. An abundance of theatre plays later, he graduated as theatre academic student of the year, with honors as a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma National Honor Society, and with his A.A. in theatre/acting. He was then admitted to both USC's and UCLA's theatre programs; once again, he graduated with honors as well as with his B.F.A. in theatre/acting from USC, where he also received the Jack Nicholson Award for Best Actor. A European tour with a theatre company followed (London, Paris, & Scotland's legendary Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival). After months on the road, he came home to his native Los Angeles with the mind-set that, "it's time for a film/television agent, and it's also time for Hollywood to know that there's a kid who once sold oranges on the streets of urban Los Angeles with a silver screen dream..." |
