He was born in London but moved to Rathfarnham on Dublin's south side when he was a young child. He has one older brother Declan and two younger sisters. His other brother Conor was killed in a car accident in 1968. His mother-in-law is Irish social columist Terry Keane and his father-in-law is Irish Chief Justice Ronan Keane.

He graduated from the College of Amenity Horticulture, National Botanic Gardens in Dublin. |
