The creators of Ashes To Ashes have revealed they have a "bigger mystery, a bigger plan" lined up for the show.
Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, who were also behind the predecessor Life On Mars, said they compromised on some of their ideas for the first series.
Speaking at a BBC question and answer event for aspiring writers, the pair said Ashes was commissioned quickly by BBC One after the success of Mars.
Graham said: "Then we started talking about what we call our three year plan, which is if, all things being equal, we can run Ashes To Ashes – if we have a series two – if we can run it beyond series two to series three, as is our hope, we can actually unveil a bigger mystery, a bigger plan. And ultimately reveal a lot more about the characters.

The Eighties revival continues - the hugely popular Ashes To Ashes will return for a second series on BBC One.
The hit drama, made by Kudos Film and Television in association with Monastic Productions, has been recommissioned by the BBC following strong ratings and fantastic feedback from its army of fans.

Ashes to Ashes began with an impressive audience of 7m last night.
The Life on Mars sequel earned a 29.1% share for BBC One at 9pm - compared with last year's slot average of 5m (22.3%). It also attracted about a third of ABC1s.
Its predecessor's first series made 7.1m (27.5%) on its opening night and a season average of 6.5m (25.5%).
