On the shell of giant turtle Great A'Tuin, four elephants stand. Perched on the top of the elephants, Discworld, a quasi-medieval society not unlike our own exists. Together they drift through space.
In the city of Ankh-Morpork, the Unseen University wizards (not all of whom are the nicest characters), expel student Rincewind (Sir David Jason). After 40 years of attempting to reach even the basic level of wizardry, he is a failure. It isn't simply a case of being magically challenged, however, Rincewind's troubles extend much further...
A ship sails up the river to Ankh, delivering to the bank a man with a strange piece if living luggage. This is Twoflower (Sean Astin), an inn-sewer-ants actuary from the Counterweight Continent and a visitor to Ankh-Morpork. Armed with a home-made phrase book and a mountain of gold housed in his magical luggage, he hopes to see Morporkian life as it truely is.
When Twoflower and his luggage arrive at a backstreet tavern, The Broken Drum, and the newcomer is seemingly unable to speak the local lingo, Rincewind comes to his aid. The visitor announces himself as a tourist, indeed the first in Discworld. Rincewind decides that tourist means 'idiot', but reluctantly becomes Twoflower's 'tour' guide.
Together the trio set out on what becomes the ultimate package holiday. But Rincewind's departure from Ankh-Morpork has adverse effects on the Octavo, the greatest of all spell books, which is kept under lock and key in the university library.
As a student, Rincewind stole a peek at the Octavo and one of the eight great spells left it's place and lodged itself in his mind. This prevented him from learning any other spell. It also prevents him from dying, a fortunate side effect once his travels with Twoflower and the luggage begin...
