Show Summary
The delectable Sophie Dahl brings her culinary prowess to television with a six-part cookery series marrying her talent for storytelling with fresh, enticing recipes.

For Sophie, food and emotion are inextricably linked. Each episode, therefore, is themed around an emotional thread including romance, nostalgia and escapism. With food as the centrepiece, she revisits treasured places, revealing the personal resonance behind each of her recipes.

From the stony Sussex beach she played on as a child, to a hidden urban cemetery and its messages of enduring love, Sophie reflects on moments in her life that have shaped her approach to food.

Sophie's quirky and unique approach to cooking makes this series a real feast – earthy, funny and, above all, straight from the heart.

1x01 - Selfish:
Sophie Dahl revels in the joy of cooking for one on a purely selfish day. Shutting the world away and answering to no-one on a day that is indulgently independent means cruising the food boutiques and cooking simple dishes with the finest of ingredients. Her selfish day begins at breakfast with her take on an omelette Arnold Bennett and the preparation of peanut butter fudge. After a sweep of the local cheese shop, she's assembling a buffalo mozzarella bruschetta with shaved fennel and  [...] (More)
1x02 - Romance:
In loving mood and inspired by the romance of train stations and graveyards, Sophie Dahl talks us through her perfect dishes for the three stages of romance. On the first date, she recommends scallops roasted in their own shells, with garlic and chilli marinade served with crushed, minty peas, and a glorious mountain of rhubarb and rosewater Eton mess sprinkled with crystallised rose petals for pudding. The honeymoon phase is all about serving sexy breakfasts at any time of the day and the  [...] (More)
1x03 - Nostalgia:
Sophie Dahl shares the recipes that remind her of home and the tastes and sensations of her youth. For Sophie, this means a supper of roasted tomato and thyme soup with double-baked cheese and chive potatoes, or a perfectly British tea of orange and raspberry Victoria sponge with orange buttercream and golden flapjacks with mango, sour cherries and coconut. To ground her firmly back in Britain, she takes a nostalgic train journey through the countryside and finds herself on a windy British beach  [...] (More)
1x04 - Melancholy:
It's a melancholic day and there's no getting away from it. The only option is to feed this melodramatic emotion with dishes that could cheer up Eeyore. Starting with bubble and squeak cakes served with red onion gravy and a languid fried egg, the joyous indulgence begins. Next, Sophie locks herself away in the shed at the end of the garden, and while reading hopeless poetry she treats herself to the perfect chocolate sauce poured over ice-cream. But her soul craves the curative power of chicken  [...] (More)
1x05 - Escapism:
At the end of a rotten week we all need to get away, but sometimes we don't have that option. Sophie's suggestion is an escapist weekend, in which she draws inspiration from her foreign travels so that one weekend can be made to feel like a week's holiday. Friday night ends with a soothing New England-style clam chowder with thyme crunchy breadcrumbs. Saturday's saucy Mexican-style brunch is quesadilla with peppers, Monterey Jack, guacamole and lime sour cream dip served with spicy hot chocolate.  [...] (More)
1x06 - Celebratory:
Sophie is in a celebratory mood - she is putting on a dinner party; not a stuffy, sit down affair but a deconstructed, fun event. She shares her tips for stress free entertaining by taking us through the two days leading up to the shindig. Her plan is to create a generous banquet from tried and trusted crowd pleasers, and she'll cook as much as she can in advance and lay it all out in a display of overt opulence. The hot pink borscht is served in a glass punch bowl and the fresh oysters are laid  [...] (More)
