Nearly four years ago, TV presenter Ben Fogle and Olympic champion James Cracknell embarked on the adventure of a lifetime – one that would see them row 2,931 miles over 49 days, across the Atlantic, where they encountered waves "bigger than houses" that capsized their 21ft boat. The Atlantic Rowing Race was followed in the BBC Two series Through Hell And High Water.
Since returning to dry land, in January 2006, Ben and James have remained firm friends and, towards the end of 2007, they decided it was time they attempted another extreme challenge together. This time, their challenge was to take part in a race to the South Pole, involving ski-racing 480 miles while pulling a 150lb sled, facing temperatures of up to -50°C and negotiating crevasses, frost-bite and severe physical exhaustion.
With no Antarctic experience, it seems like an extremely tall order for the pair, particularly as they are racing far more experienced teams. But when you throw into the mix a deadly tropical disease and a third team-mate who pulls out due to other work commitments, the task seems impossible.
